About the Department

The roots of Allama Anwar Shah Kashmiri Library, GDC Kupwara dates back to 1988 with the inception of “Government Degree College Kupwara”. However after functioning from different departments for many years, the present multi-storied library building was formally established in the year 2009-10 in the name of Allama Anwar Shah Kashmiri Library. Primarily an academic library with a vast collection of learning and resource materials, it stands established to cater the academic needs and general development of undergraduate students and teachers of the college. With an adequate infrastructure, modern facilities, highly qualified and professional human resource, the Library is presently centre of attraction having its total collection of 29000 books segregated into different mini-libraries which are effectively and efficiently managed for the larger academic interests of students and teachers of the college. The total collections of the library have been classified according to the internationally acclaimed Dewey Decimal Classification Scheme. The library has a dedicated internet facility to all so that the student and teaching community can communicate conveniently and collaborate with academic counterparts locally and internationally. It is an automated library with the bibliographical details of the entire collection entered in MARC Format in SOUL 3.0 Library Management Software with barcode labels pasted on all books. The OPAC library provides simple as well as advanced search facilities with the choice of Boolean operators, nevertheless the students of this college have been found mostly using simple search options with the preferential choices of title and author search.

Future Targets

  • The library will shortly implement RFID Technology which will begin with pasting the whole collection with RFID tags, a chip based technology, which plugs the book theft by mischievous users and detects the unauthorized borrowing of books by a Sensor Gate called RFID Gate. It also decodes the bibliographical details of book(s) stored into a chip and patron details on a smart card and displays them on a screen called as self-check-in/check-out machine, thereby enabling the patrons to issue and return the books in a seamless environment. This technology is called as RFID Technology.
  • We are also seriously up for Remote Access Facility (RAF) to our students and teachers for maximizing our collection base remotely.
  • The library will shortly extend its OPAC facility to wide users at their desktops irrespective of their geographical positioning through WEBOPAC.
  • Though part of library shelving is wooden, however the remaining steel wracks and lockers will soon be replaced by wooden shelves for space saving and further beautification of the library.
