About the Department
The Department of Kashmiri at Government Degree College Kupwara is dedicated to the promotion, preservation, and academic advancement of the Kashmiri language, literature and cultural heritage. The department plays a significant role in fostering linguistic awareness and cultural identity among students.
The college was granted permission by the University of Kashmir to introduce the Kashmiri subject from the academic session 2021–22 retrospectively. Accordingly, the first batch of students was admitted in 2023 along with the sanctioned post. At present, the department has one faculty member, Dr. Imtiyaz Hussain, serving as Assistant Professor.
In alignment with the vision of NEP 2020, the department offers Kashmiri as a Major, Minor, Multidisciplinary and Skill-based subject, thereby providing flexibility and interdisciplinary learning opportunities. The intake capacity of the department is 30 students per batch.
The curriculum encompasses classical and modern Kashmiri literature, including poetry, prose and folk traditions, while also focusing on language proficiency and critical thinking. The department encourages students to participate in seminars, workshops, and cultural activities to enhance their academic and creative engagement.
The department also organizes educational tours to various historical places of Kashmir to provide students with first-hand exposure to their historical and cultural significance. These visits help students understand how such places are deeply connected to the region’s cultural heritage and traditions.
Through its academic and co-curricular initiatives, the Department of Kashmiri strives to preserve the rich cultural legacy of Kashmir and prepare students for higher education and diverse career opportunities.
Head of the Department’s Message

Dr. Imtiyaz Hussain Hajam
Head, Department of Kashmiri
It gives me great pleasure to present the Department of Kashmiri at Government Degree College Kupwara.
The Department of Kashmiri embodies the local ethos, culture, emotions and identity of our region. The Kashmiri language is not merely a medium of communication but a rich repository of heritage and tradition, holding a unique and significant place in Jammu and Kashmir. The department is committed to the promotion, preservation and enrichment of this invaluable linguistic and cultural legacy.
Through the study of Kashmiri literature, the department connects students with their cultural roots while nurturing centuries-old traditions. It strives to inculcate strong linguistic skills and cultural awareness among students, enabling them to uphold their identity even amidst the challenges of a rapidly changing and metropolitan world.
One of the primary objectives of the department is to foreground the rich folklore and idiomatic expressions of the Kashmiri language, thereby preserving its originality and depth. With a spirit of cooperation and coordination, the department promotes a multidisciplinary approach, relating Kashmiri language and literature to contemporary contexts.
Since its introduction with the approval of the University of Kashmir, the department has been working consistently to provide quality education, research exposure, and cultural engagement. Through seminars, workshops, and educational tours, students are encouraged to explore and appreciate the historical and cultural richness of Kashmir.
I urge students to actively engage with the subject and take pride in their linguistic and cultural heritage. Together, let us work towards preserving and promoting Kashmiri for future generations.
