About the Department

Overview

The Department of Economics, established in 1988, is one of the founding departments of Government Degree College Kupwara. Since its inception, the department has been dedicated to promoting academic excellence and developing a sound understanding of economic principles among students. It is permanently affiliated with the University of Kashmir and strictly follows the curriculum and guidelines prescribed by the university.

Academic Programmes and Curriculum

The department offers Economics as a Major, Minor, and Multidisciplinary Course (MDC), providing flexibility and choice to students from varied academic streams. The curriculum is designed to be comprehensive and relevant, covering core and applied areas of Economics. Key courses offered include Principles of Microeconomics, Principles of Macroeconomics, Public Finance, Mathematical Economics, Financial Economics, Money and Banking, International Finance, Indian Economy, Economics of Development, and Statistical Methods for Economics etc. The programme structure aims to build a strong conceptual base while also equipping students with analytical, quantitative, and interpretative skills necessary for understanding real-world economic issues.

Teaching and Learning Approach

The department adopts a student-centric approach to teaching, focusing on clarity of concepts, interactive learning, and application-oriented understanding. Efforts are made to connect theoretical knowledge with practical economic realities, thereby enhancing the relevance of classroom learning. To encourage greater participation and enrolment in the subject, counseling and orientation sessions are conducted during the admission process. These sessions guide students in making informed academic choices and highlight the scope of Economics in higher education and employment.

Faculty

The department is supported by a dedicated faculty comprising one permanent faculty member and one faculty member under Academic Arrangement. Despite its limited strength, the faculty remains actively engaged in maintaining academic standards and supporting student learning.
