About the Department
The Department of Chemistry has been established in this college in 2000. Being one of the leading subjects in pure sciences, chemistry offers the students an ideal platform to explore the fascinating world of chemical reactions with the basic understanding of physico-chemical principles, composition and structure of organic, inorganic and bio-organic materials in our daily life. The department teaches students a fine balance of inorganic, organic and physical chemistry inter-disciplined with related fields like mathematics, physics, biochemistry, computer applications, etc., thereby enabling the bachelors to develop an awareness of issues within chemistry that overlap with other related disciplines. The course opens avenues for pursuing post-graduation studies in different areas of chemistry (inorganic, organic, physical, analytical and industrial). It also opens avenues in polymer sciences, forensic sciences, material sciences, biotechnology, nanotechnology, etc. A wide range of carrier options are available to graduates and post-graduates in teaching, industry (chemical and pharmaceutical) and research. The department is well-equipped with modern facilities and infrastructure.
Laboratories:
The department is having two (02) full-fledged laboratories, one Chemistry Equipment Room (CER) and a chemical store with all kinds of equipment’s and chemicals/glassware available as required for conducting of experimental work of UG as well as PG programs of the subject including research projects.
SWOC analysis of the department & future plans:
- Strength:
The Department is established in Science block with two (02) functional laboratories, one Chemistry Equipment Room (CER) and a chemical store. The department has adequate infrastructure with an uninterrupted electric and water supply. The laboratory is well-equipped with modern equipment’s such as UV-Visible spectrophotometer (Single-Beam), Digital Conductivity Meters, Polari meters, TLC Kit, double distillation plants, laptop, desktop and printer.
- Weakness:
The routine work of the department is badly affected by the periodic transfer of permanent faculty and engagement of contractual lectures.
- Opportunity:
The department has enough space, infrastructure and equipments that could run full-fledged PG Course and research in Chemistry, if adequate human resource is provided by Administrative department.
- Challenges:
The establishment of research centre’s in terms of minor or major research projects is a challenge for the department as the periodic transfer of the faculty has a direct impact on the research projects.
Head of the Department’s Message

Dr. Irshad Ahmad Lone
Head, Department of Chemistry
It gives me immense pleasure to present an overview of the Department of Chemistry at Government Degree College Kupwara. The department has consistently strived to uphold the highest standards of teaching, learning, and research, fostering an environment that encourages intellectual curiosity, scientific temperament, and innovation among students.
With a very well-qualified, dedicated and experienced faculty, the department is running under the headship of Dr. Irshad Ahmad Lone. The department has the distinction of publishing research papers from the college and thereby enshrining the college name in the external and ever-lasting words of journals. Our faculty members remain actively engaged in academic and research pursuits, contributing to the advancement of chemical sciences while mentoring students to excel in their academic and professional journeys.
The department is well-equipped with laboratory facilities that provide students with hands-on experience and practical exposure, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of theoretical concepts. We place strong emphasis on developing analytical thinking, problem-solving skills, and a research-oriented mindset, which are essential for success in today’s competitive and rapidly evolving scientific world.
Under NEP-2020, the college has recently introduced the 7th and 8th semesters, which will enable students to complete a one-year postgraduate programme in Chemistry at the college level. This progressive step has opened new avenues for higher learning and academic growth within the institution, allowing students to deepen their knowledge and enhance their career prospects.
Looking ahead, our vision is to transform the department into a centre of excellence in chemical education and research. We aim to strengthen research infrastructure, promote interdisciplinary collaborations, and encourage innovation-driven learning. The department is committed to nurturing responsible citizens and skilled professionals who can contribute meaningfully to society and address global scientific challenges.
I extend my best wishes to all students and invite aspiring learners to be a part of this vibrant academic community, where knowledge meets discovery and learning leads to transformation.
