On August 13,2025, the NSS (National Service Scheme) units of Govt. Degree College, Kupwara, organized an inspiring Swachhta Pledge and Cleanliness Drive as part of the college’s activities to celebrate the 79th Independence Day of India. The event was held in the main lawn of the college, where a large gathering of students, faculty members, and non-teaching staff assembled to participate in this meaningful initiative. The Principal of the College, Prof.(Dr.) Ab. Rashid Malik, inaugurated the programme with a motivational address, underscoring the significance of cleanliness as a tribute to the freedom fighters who envisioned a clean, healthy, and prosperous nation. Dr. Mohammad Iqbal Darzi, Staff Secretary and Head of the Commerce Department, also spoke on the occasion, stressing the importance of the Swachh Bharat Mission and sharing practical suggestions for sustaining cleanliness drives in daily life.
Following the addresses, all participants stood together to take the Swachhta Pledge, affirming their commitment to keeping their surroundings clean, avoiding littering, and inspiring others to adopt environmentally responsible habits. The pledge ceremony set a strong moral tone for the activities that followed.
The cleanliness drive was carried out both within the college campus and in its surrounding areas. Participants, equipped with gloves, brooms, and biodegradable collection bags, actively removed plastic waste, paper, and other non-biodegradable materials. Students displayed remarkable enthusiasm, proving that the youth of Kupwara are not only academically accomplished but also socially responsible. Teaching and non-teaching staff joined the effort wholeheartedly, setting an example of leadership through action. This combined pledge and drive was more than an act of cleaning; it was a celebration of unity, civic responsibility, and environmental stewardship. By contributing their time and effort to this initiative, participants honored the ideals of independence, responsibility, and community service.
The event was efficiently coordinated by Dr. Khalid Bashir, Sr. Assistant Professor History and NSS Programme Officer of Unit-I, along with Dr. Mohammad Abass Bhat, Assistant Professor of EVS and NSS Programme Officer of Unit-ll. Under the guidance of the college administration, the NSS units aim to institutionalize such activities as regular features, reinforcing the college’s dedication to environmental sustainability.
The successful completion of this event not only enhanced the cleanliness and beauty of the campus but also instilled a deep sense of pride and responsibility among all present, making it a fitting tribute to the 79th Independence Day of India.
